CARTER G. WOODSON
CARTER G. WOODSON, (1875 -1950) Called “The Father of Black History,” Woodson organized the first African American History Week and founded the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson chose February for the observance of Black History Month to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Born in Virginia in 1875, Carter Godwin Woodson was the son of former slaves. He earned his bachelor’s from Berea College in Kentucky, his master’s at the University of Chicago in 1908, and his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1912.
He taught public school, was a principal, and later joined Howard University as a professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Woodson founded the Journal of African American History. He also started a celebration called, Negro History Week. The week was later extended to Black History Month, and Woodson became known as the Father of Black History.
He also authored numerous books. One of his titles, The Negro in Our History has been reprinted eleven times.
