LOUIS ARMSTRONG

LOUIS ARMSTRONG, (1900 -1971) Bandleader, entertainer, and the first African American jazz soloist to achieve worldwide fame in jazz music.

Louie Armstrong was one of the most important musicians of our time. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1972.

Celebrated jazz trumpeter and singer. His name – Louie Armstrong.

Born in 1901 in New Orleans, Louis Daniel Armstrong grew up poor, doing odd jobs for money.

On New Year’s Eve, at the age of 12, Armstrong fired a gun into the air. It landed him in reform school, where he got serious about playing the cornet. Released by 14, music became his passion and a life-long career.

Nicknamed “Satchmo for his wide smile, Armstrong toured worldwide and made numerous appearances on television, stage, and screen.

Armstrong’s trumpet and signature handkerchief influenced the history of jazz. He has been inducted into seven Halls of Fame and has a star on Hollywood Boulevard.

Best known for What a Wonderful World, it was Hello Dolly that won the Grammy.
