MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., (1929 -1968) Civil Rights leader and minister who led the Civil Rights Movement with a non-violent approach to social change.

No one was more instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  In 1977 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day became a national holiday in 1986.

Born in this house in Atlanta in 1929, Martin Luther King, Jr. was the pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

King graduated from Morehouse in 1948, from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1951, and received his doctorate from Boston University in 1955.

He became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church when he was only 25, and later at Ebenezer while guiding the Civil Rights Movement with his message of non-violence.

He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. He campaigned to end segregation at lunch counters and mobilized the March on Washington in 1963 where he delivered his historic, I Have a Dream speech. He later received the highest honor when he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
